As soon as you hear the word Rajasthan the first thing that comes to your mind is the Thar desert. Rajasthan is known for its ancient forts, palaces, and royalty. The kaleidoscopic festivals and colourful dresses and delicious food will just blow your mind. Rajasthan is truly the jewel in India’s crown.
Located on the Northwestern side of India, Rajasthan is known for its rich culture comprising of various folk dances and music and the cuisine which was influenced by the war-like lifestyle and ingredients available in this arid region.
Rajasthan is literally the Land of the Kings. It is home to the chivalrous Rajputs, and its battle-scarred heritage is ingrained with pride and tradition. The upper rank of this medieval society built magnificent palaces and forts, many of which are now sumptuous hotels and impressive museums. In addition, stunning handicrafts and fine arts were developed and nurtured through patronage by the maharajas.
The intensity and spectrum of colour in Rajasthan is impossible to ignore. The rainbow of fire-engine red turbans and emerald green and canary yellow saris is simply dazzling. Little wonder so many fashion designers find their inspiration and raw materials in this state. The lucky visitor might even see a flash of orange while tiger-spotting in Ranthambhore National Park. Easier to catch on a camera are the bright hues of Rajasthan’s many festivals: from garishly decorated camels in Pushkar, or painted elephants in Jaipur, to the rainbow explosions of Diwali and Holi, celebrated across the region.
Dance – Rajasthan has many forms of folk dances which require a lot of skill and perseverance. Each dance form in this state has a significance to history & culture. They are lively, vibrant and full of energy which is why it captivates you. Ghoomar of Udaipur and Kalbeliya from Jaisalmer are the most famous ones and also have gained international recognition. Bhavai, Kathputli(puppet show), Kachchhi ghodi, Gair, Chari, chang are the other main folk dances
Food – Ker Sangri, Dal Baati churma, Gatte ki Sabji(curry), Papad ki Sabji(curry), laal Maas(meat in red gravy), Bajre ki roti(bread), Mohan Maas and pyaas ki kachori are some of the traditional Rajasthani food.

Travel tips –
- The best time to visit Rajasthan is from October to February.
- It is quite hot and dry so stay hydrated.
- The sunny afternoons and chilly nights during winter seasons demand a different set of clothes. Light cotton clothes for the days and sweaters, hoodies or jackets for nights is recommended.
- You can shop till you drop. You can purchase textiles, traditional shoes, jewellery, Indian artefacts, dupattas, bags, decor pieces, and lots more from the local shops so keep some extra space while packing.
- Spend one whole day to explore the Thar Desert as there are many desert activities to do.
- Pack a pair of comfortable shoes or sneaker and a pair of flats as the huge forts and palaces will leave you tired feet.
Visiting Rajasthan has changed my entire perspective about Indian traditions and culture. The heritage is so rich that you get lost in the history of these kings and the beauty of the buildings. I will never forget the colourful streets and appetising food that I had. If you want to experience something like this Rajasthan is the right place to visit.
